This course focuses on advanced issues in conducting research in forensic settings, including experimental and non-experimental research design and methods, theory development and the conceptualization of research problems, the formation of testable hypotheses and the use of statistics, operationalizing and measuring variables, ethical issues, analysis and interpretation of findings, and the development of a research proposal. This course will examine a range of theoretical approaches that have been used to explain forensic psychology, and will provide an understanding of the principles of studying the criminal justice system. Students will analyze the ways in which psychological theories can be applied to the criminal justice process investigative process (including the presentation of evidence), issues relating to judicial decision making, the nature of expert evidence and the through-care and after-care of victims, witnesses and suspects of crime.

An understanding of advanced multivariate statistical methods is necessary for all students pursuing graduate degrees. This course examines the principles of addiction and substance abuse counseling. Techniques for assessment are outlined, current treatment models are reviewed. The special issues of addiction counseling for alcoholics and substance abusers, including transference and countertransference problems, forming the therapeutic alliance and concurrent diagnoses are the discussed in this course.

This course surveys the major schools of thought related to crime causation (e.g., sociological, psychological, and biological) and particular theories about crime and delinquency, places these theories in historical context, and reviews some of the primary assumptions of the theories and conclusions reached from criminology research. 

This capstone assessment course further develops the capacity of students to perform forensic evaluations, integrating multiple sources of data, and enables the student to present the results of such evaluations in a practical manner. This course will focus on detailed interpretations of representative forensic assessment protocols and case histories. Topics include: competency to stand trial, criminal insanity defenses, pre-sentencing evaluations, dangerousness, assessment of police candidates, job disability and fitness to return to full-duty status, and malingering. Presents an intensive study, both theoretical and clinical, of the victim. Concentrates on community attitudes towards victims, the interaction of the victim with the criminal justice system and programs for psychological rehabilitation of the victim.

This module with cover critical evaluation and examination of violence and aggression, their origins and determinants, and their impact on the individual and society. Also, a variety of perspectives will be presented in order to examine why individuals become aggressive or engage in antisocial behaviors. In particular, we will focus on specific factors (e.g., hormones, mental disorders, the media) that increase the likelihood that harmful thoughts or behaviors will occur. Provides practical experience in the evaluation of cognitive and intellectual functioning in children, adolescents and adults. Focuses on the administration, scoring and interpretation of instruments such as the WAIS-R, the WISC-R, the WPPSI and the Stanford Binet. Discusses general issues such as the nature of human intelligence and its measurements with explicit linkage to issues in forensic mental health.

In this course, we will examine the major theories, debates and measures that have shaped the field of deception detection. We will focus primarily on beliefs about deception, cues to deception and deception judgements. In addition, we will discuss emerging issues in the field (e.g., vulnerable populations, techniques that improve accuracy).

This course will provide a detailed overview of current research issues and theories in forensic psychology. The goal of this course is to introduce you to some representative areas of forensic psychology and to teach you how psychology research contributes to the legal system. You will be introduced to the methods used by forensic psychologists by exploring a number of studies devoted to topics related to forensic psychology. Students also learn how to critically read forensic psychology research and how best to apply research results to forensic situations in correctional, court, public policy and police settings.

This course is designed to introduce students to the interdisciplinary nature of forensic psychology in the context of legal processes and to the application of psychological knowledge in the Turkish Justice System. The topics will focus on the applications of research and findings of legal psychology in a variety of criminal and civil related areas.  

This course will focus on the major theories of criminal and aggressive behavior. Viewpoints from cognitive, psychodynamic, behavioral, social learning, descriptive and developmental theorists are discussed and compared with current classification systems. Case examples are used to illustrate the various theories. If time permits, selected specialized topics may be considered, including alcohol and crime, sex crimes, juvenile delinquency, and women and crime.

This course will consider the definition and various forms of terror- ism, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of terrorism typologies. Various forms of political, religious and cultural terrorism will be examined, as well as their causes. Learning theory, psychodynamic theory and other theoretical constructs will be considered for their salience in helping to reach an understanding of terrorism from a mental health perspective.

This course focuses on various issues in relation to investigative interviewing and assessment, including offender profiling, eyewitness identification and the interviewing of victims, witnesses and suspected offenders, and children as well as vulnerable persons. The module will highlight a range of theoretical paradigms that are relevant to the investigative process (including decision making processes), and will provide students with a detailed understanding of the ways in which the collection of evidence, through appropriate and psychologically robust interviewing techniques, has been enhanced and improved upon over the past two decades. Click here.

This course encompasses the use of SPSS and other computer software to manage data sets, produce descriptive statistics, graphs, or other output that appropriately summarize patterns and relationships in the data, and produce inferential statistics that appropriately test hypotheses and support substantive interpretations and conclusions. Inferential statistics include bivariate and multivariate models.

This course surveys the field of brain and behavior, including its relevant philosophical underpinnings, its place within traditional and forensic settings, and practical applications in the areas of assessment and rehabilitation of brain injury and deficits. This introduction examines brain-behavior correlates, tests employed in the evaluation of nervous system trauma and the common syndromes affiliated with such injury.

This course aims at providing a systematic introduction of concepts, theories and practices, with a focus on equipping students with toolkits of handling conflict and negotiation. The course content is composed of two intimately related parts. The first part introduces the nature and types of conflict, mechanism of conflict escalation and de-escalation, and conflict resolution styles. The second part of the course discusses the characteristics of interest based negotiation and negotiation strategies. This course focuses on the psychological aspects of mediation and negotiation processes. Specifically, students will learn strategies to avoid various cognitive biases in conflict situations and negotiation, the building blocks of negotiation, the differences of distributive versus value creating negotiation approaches, the strategies of achieving integrative outcomes.

The aim of this module is to provide students with the necessary skills to work as a scientist-practitioner in forensic settings. This will include the development of core skills in reflective practice, evidence-based practice, personal development, report writing, therapeutic interventions, group processes, consultancy and training skills, and the providing of expert witness testimony. These skills will be developed through an understanding of ethical principles and practices within professional forensic settings. The practicum provides students with opportunities to acquire workplace skills and knowledge while exploring the relationship between theory and practice. This course will introduce students to the basics of machine learning and its application in crime prediction. Students will learn how to use Python programming language to perform various tasks such as data preprocessing and cleaning, data visualization, and implementing machine learning algorithms. Meta-analysis is becoming the gold standard method of reviewing and summarizing the scientific literature, and it has contributed greatly to the current body of scientific knowledge. Meta-analysis is a methodology for conducting quantitative literature reviews in which the outcomes of empirical research studies are aggregated. The aim of this course is to assists students in the identification and delineation of research- able topics, leading to the development of a thesis prospectus by the end of the semester.
